CocOon Masks

Hi I'm Rachael and I'm a professional stage designer. Lockdown gave me some space and time in which to explore the remarkable world of natural dyes and so CocOon was born!

With the sudden need to wear a face mask came a new waste problem - mask rubbish started appearing all over the streets and the environment. I wanted to make a difference by offering an alternative - through careful research I designed a mask that's effective and affordable, but which also champions sustainable practices.

CocOon masks - www.cocoonmask.com - are constructed as a hybrid of three layers (as recommended by WHO) - two are organic peace silk and one is organic hemp. Hemp is the most environmentally sustainable fabric to produce (when it grows it absorbs more carbon than it produces) yet it is sadly underused by the garment industry.

The elastic is biodegradable eco-elastic and the thread is made from waste wood pulp, meaning the masks are 100% compostable!

The fabrics are hand dyed using sustainably foraged leaves and leftover kitchen waste, and are hand sewn using a vintage hand crank Singer sewing machine. Each mask comes with a carry bag and free lifetime repairs, ensuring every mask has the longest possible life.

I truly believe in these masks as an environmental first.

For every five masks sold, a mask is donated to The Trussell Trust.
